Where is Brighton & Hove? The city of Brighton & Hove, is located on the South coast of England just 80km from London, with the South Downs National Park to the north and the sea to the south. Why is it called Brighton & Hove? The city was created in 2000 from the two neighbouring towns of Brighton, and Hove, where the school is located. Are Brighton and Hove different? Hove is a residential part of the city but it has many shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs. Brighton is the more lively part of the city with theatres and nightclubs, but it is only 10 minutes from the school by bus. Where can I stay? The most popular, and best, place to stay is with a host family. You will have a room, either private or shared, in a local family’s house, and will have the choice of eating with the family or making your own meals.You can also stay in a hotel or in a room in a shared student house, but you will have to organise your own accommodation, although we will advise you on the best options. How is English food? Many people worry about the food before they come to England, but the food here is usually very good. As well as traditional English food, which is meat or fish with vegetables and potatoes, English families enjoy food from around the world; especially Italy, India and China. Can I find food from my country in Brighton & Hove? The answer is almost certainly yes. .There are hundreds of restaurants in the city, offering food from every corner of the world. If you want to cook for yourself, then you will find that supermarkets here have a wide range of international foods, and there are a number of international food stores as well. What can I do when I'm not studying? Anything you want! We organise evenings out in local pubs, ten-pin bowling, playing football, picnics and even paint-balling. There are many things that you can do alone or with your friends, and you can buy trips to other British and European cities from the school. Is Brighton & Hove a safe city? We are confident that you will have a safe and trouble free stay in Brighton & Hove, but, just as in every city, you should always watch your personal possessions when you are in crowded public places. There are some neighbourhoods in the city where you should not walk alone late at night, but these are far from the school, the city centre and our host family accommodation. If you do have any problems, the police here are very friendly and helpful. How do I get to Brighton & Hove? There are regular trains to Brighton from Luton and Gatwick Airports, and regular buses from these two airports plus Heathrow and Stanstead. What can I do in Brighton & Hove when the sun is shining? Brighton & Hove is a very lively seaside holiday resort so there is always plenty to do when the weather is good. There are six miles of beach, where you can swim, surf, windsurf, kiteboard, kayak, sail, play volleyball, basketball or football, walk on the promenade or pier, or just relax and sunbathe. There are also dozens of parks where you can take a picnic or just lay on the grass, and Brighton is surrounded by beautiful countryside. What can I do when the weather isn't so good? If you come in the winter, there is still a lot to do in Brighton & Hove. The city has hundreds of pubs and bars and dozens of nightclubs. There are also two multi-screen cinemas and a number of theatres. You can find live music every night of the week, often with free entry.There are a number of indoor sports centres in the city for more active people, where you can take part in a wide range of sports and activities. The city also has a ten-pin bowling alley, an ice rink, indoor golf and lots more. Where can I go shopping? Brighton & Hove is famous for its shops. You will find everything here, from designer clothes to cheap souvenirs. There are four main shopping areas in the city:Churchill Square; an indoor shopping mall where you can buy clothes, shoes, music and eat in the top floor food hall.Western Road; a mile of famous names like Top Shop, Vodafone, HMV and Woolworths.East Street and the Lanes; expensive and exclusive boutiques and jewellery shops.North Laine; a small area of mostly pedestrian streets full of weird and wonderful shops selling almost anything you can imagine, and a few things you can’t.
